2Chip music
³-----------------------------------²«Chip music»³-----------------------------------²By: ¹Oxide/Sonic²
These days music in intros and loaders on the Amiga are again short
C64-style chips. Tunes aren't usually more than 20kb long. Are these tunes
really music? Some people just hate chip music and think that demo music is
the only real music using even over 40kb long samples. But hey! Isn't the
chip music the original kind of computermusic!? What about the music of
³Rob Hubbard², ³David Whittaker² and other great authors on the ³C-64²?
Isn't synth- and ³ProTracker² chipmusic the only kind of music to
fit the intros and loaders of the Amiga scene today!
³History²:
Before ³SoundTracker² Amiga scene musicians used to compose chip music on
synthetic sound based softwares such as ³SoundMonitor², ³FutureComposer and
³Delta-Music².That was really the only way to make music then. Soundtracker
and ³NoiseTracker² brought the samples into the Amiga scene.
It was the year 1990, when ³4-mat/Anarchy² invited chipmusic on
SoundTracker. Legendary enough; He used little snaps with Loop-command creating
funky C64-style beeping and chords. Chip music was back! For a long time
4-mat was the only musician using Tracker-chips. Step by step other musicians
started to use his idea - at first with "real" samples as cool solo
instruments. Later they started to do music for intros and loaders using
only with Tracker-chips! Nowadays chip-music is in it's new boom. 4-mat has
quit the scene and the future of chip-music is in the hands of the others.
Many musicians see the chip-music as ³too childish² and composers
using chip sounds can easily get fame as a lamer. I think that is ³absolutely
wrong². It is true that making demo- and compo-tunes may really be more
difficult than composing chip-intro tunes that are usually based on quite
simple melodies. Despite of that, many compo-musicians can't compose funky
intro tunes and that's usually the reason they hate chip-music!
If you aren't a chipmusic fan yet, try to find some 4-mat's oldies
like ³Share 'n Enjoy², turn some power on your stereo and try listening.
You can only love or hate chipmusic on ProTracker. If you're a fan, you can
contact me 'n maybe send over your masterpieces. Check the address
somewhere!
